In the first phase of the People Power Partnership project, several small dance theatre productions were realised in different cities across Europe. Young dancers travelled to the partner cities to work together on the productions.

In the second phase, a central production was realised involving several partner cities. The Aktionstheater PAN.OPTIKUM brought me on board to develop an audience app that allowed the viewers to influence the performance live.
My Role:
 My role was to work with the artistic director to design audience interactions for one, and later several, moments in the play. The aim was to make it easy for the audience to access the play, to make their own interactions meaningful and to ensure that the collective interactions had an impact on what was happening on stage. I was also responsible for the complete programmatic implementation and release of the iOS and Android apps, as well as the configuration and stage production applications.

Result:
The production gave me an exciting insight into the artistic and narrative collaboration with an international theatre production. Unfortunately, I also had to realise that it is very difficult to remotely develop an application with the above-mentioned goals and requirements for a theatre performance that is already in full production. For the interactive moments, there should have been proof of concept prototypes in smaller test productions, and the scope of the application should have been kept smaller in view of a one-man development team. Instead, there are far more features in the final application than originally planned. In addition to the live functionality, there is also an interactive survey that collects audience information via a server backend, and a dynamically expandable multi-language selection that can be fed via the server backend and expanded to include new languages without an app update.
