In the Rakete Jetzt! children's club at the GRIPS Theatre Berlin, children between the ages of 9 and 12 playfully explore topics from their everyday lives and gradually develop a play. The GRIPS Theatre had already published a theatre/game hybrid called LEVEL FEAR in 2021 and now wanted to create another digital production, for which I was brought in as Game Design Lead. The aim was to become more interactive with this production and to work together not only on a technological level, but also in terms of game and narrative design.
My Role:
At the start of the project, I insisted on a gameplay ideation that took into account both the story in development and its key themes, as well as how and why the game should be presented in AR. I believe that the decision to use a particular technology should always be subservient to a design, gameplay or narrative goal, not the other way around.

During production, I led the development team, helped code the core mechanics, found and implemented tech art solutions, and eventually created the final builds and released them to the App Store and Play Store.

Result:
As mentioned above, the game's AR mechanics were tested for their suitability to the narrative themes and appropriate gameplay loops. The scaling of the AR scenes, as well as the type of interaction and input accepted, played a central role. The result was mechanics that build on the natural exploratory properties of an AR experience and combine them with the non-linear storytelling of an investigative detective story.

To haptically anchor this story in the analogue world, we decided to use a fold-out map with multiple hidden markers. Each of these markers loads an AR scene that can be explored. As the player finds clues or witnesses, they can capture them using a camera function to advance the story. The story of Marshmallow Mystery is set in a holiday camp where mysterious things are happening. The starting point was an exploration of the topic of secrets. The Rakete Jetzt! children asked themselves why people's privacy is such a precious commodity, what threatens it and when intruding on it can be justified. Together they developed a story about big secrets, revealing them and protecting them.
